Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is the martial art based on using leverage and technique to beat a bigger, stronger opponent.  The focus is on grappling and ground fighting to gain a dominant position.  Excellent for self defence and discipline at any level, the system was developed by the Gracie family and is practiced by the majority of professional MMA fighters, and is also popular with law enforcement and military groups.

From the perspective of realism, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is the most effective form of self-defence and unarmed combat. The reasons for this are: i) the level of realism able to be achieved at every sparring session; and ii) the high-level of safety at which you can train consistently and realistically .

A large part of BJJ practice is to spar or grapple against an adversary. The objective of sparring is for each opponent to submit the other through the use of joint locks or chokes. You are able to apply the lock or choke to the point where your opponent must 'tap-out', or they risk damage to life or limb. Because your opponent can 'tap-out' as soon as they feel uncomfortable you are able to train realistically without any damage to each other. This way of training imposes a level of realism which best prepares the exponents of BJJ for a real life and death situation with minimal adverse impact and maximum gain.

By constantly immersing ourselves in this type of scenario we are able to condition ourselves to: understanding the benefits of conflict avoidance, the mechanics of self-defence and the psychology of fighting; and in acting, reacting and thinking in a way which will greatly increase the chances of survival.

This is why BJJ is especially beneficial for military and emergency services personnel.
